X12 Subwoofer Review

I bought one of these subwoofers purely on the basis that the price was too good & I thought what's the deal. It arrived in 2 days. I connected it to front Pre-Outs of Denon 1500 PMA AE amplifier and decided to test it against a similar rated Velodyne Sub in similar position location with ports cleared. I put on Leonard Bernstein's 1812 overture to rattle the sub with the explosive cannons. After adjusting the feed, phase, & volume to sync it with a pair of Tannoy dual concentric speakers, I was actually amazed at the reasonable tightness and depth of the low level bass response. When the cannons went off they rumbled slightly so I lowered the feed level and checked them again. Not too bad. I switched over to the Velodyne for comparision and although the Velodyne seemed to recover quicker, I felt the Dream performed reasonably well against a sub that was almost 10 times the price. My next test was to try some 5.1 cinema so I reconnected the Dream X12 to Pre-outs of an old Pioneer VSX-D609S Receiver and popped in Blade Runner-The Final Cut. This movie has some nice deep bass booms at the beginning so I wanted to test the depth and resonance. I have to admit that again I was surprised at the apparent tonality and although a quicker, tighter responding subwoofer with quick recovery is desireable I found this sub acceptable for the very reasonable price paid. I would recommend it to anyone on a budget who wants to add some bottom end to their listening experience.
